Maja Beattie is a graduate of Bath Spa University, where she studied Fine Art Painting. Her work deals with her uncanny fascination for foraging; whether it be through second hand shops or old family archives she uses the medium of large scale oil paintings to communicate these explorative experiences.
Employing a dark palette of deathly blues and deep reds she conveys a sense of an aging process and a fading glamour. Glossy mediums and sections of heavy varnish create a sensual surface which mirror the tactile element of handling old objects.
Beattie immerses the viewer in a sense of the uncanny through the medium of paint; she considers the impact of the human trace and whether paint can communicate this embedded history.
