Throughout the production of my mixed media paintings, I have endeavoured to create a sense of depth and atmosphere through the process of building up and constructing a scene. I start with thin ethereal washes, which are then layered with numerous glazes of acrylic paint, photographic collage (using my own photography) and polymer resin. The resulting vista is one which brims with romance and yet simmers with uncertainty. The practice of these methods and techniques has helped me to achieve an extremely considered approach to my work and in turn, allows the viewer to contemplate the unique and handmade quality of painting, as well as, the constructed and theatrical nature of the final image.
The title of my work refers to the scientific terms used to describe rapid eye movements made by the human eye as it scans a scene (saccades) and then pauses at points of interest (fixations). The moment of fixation is also the moment of perception; a flash of perceptive clarity, like a split second spark of recognition. And yet, amazingly, these moments can happen when we are seeing or experiencing something for the first time.
