My artistic practise as a painter began with an investigation into the subject of verbal and visual poetry, how language can describe or translate profound life experiences. The world, as I see it, revolves around a ‘greater paradox’ of events that can or cannot be said or described. This continuous and creative process has been at the centre to my understanding of human relationships with others and with the world around.
Working mainly with the medium of painting and drawing I create a verbal-visual language that includes modes of eastern and western poetic expression. Calligraphic and print mark making are combined into a visual construct. I explore the potential of poetry that moves towards the interpretation of gesture, colour and fluidity to create an unconventional and even a utopian form of expression. Contextually, this conveys historical and contemporary issues that address art history, globalisation and transnationalism.
Lately, as part of my MA in Visual and Transnational art, I have been researching the process of cultural exchange and multiculturalism influence on western visual art. This research project is about 'locating' the eastern calligraphy, poetry and abstraction within the historiography of Brazilian Concrete Poetry.
